Engine Books is a self-funded, one-woman show. While it is not expected to generate significant profit, it is not a nonprofit organization, either. We live in a world that does not value literature in financial terms; our culture tells us that the production of literature is mundane, even frivolous. Grant programs disproportionately underfund writers compared with visual and performing artists. Every force around us argues that the work writers and editors do is worthless.
We know better. Reading forces us to empathize with other people, to engage our imaginations in the act of taking in a story. Reading is the antidote to passive forms of communication and entertainment. Creating that antidote warrants compensation. More promotion, funded by your donation, leads to more book sales and more compensation for Engine Books authors.
